Summer College Programs For High School Juniors
Summer college programs for high school juniors can be a great way for teens to get a leg up on an upcoming college career, or simply a great opportunity to take advantage of summertime. Rather than fritter away the time at a minimum-wage job – or worse, doing nothing at all – a college program can provide a valuable opportunity.
Summer enrichment programs are offered by most community colleges, and many universities. Entrance requirements are usually minimal, with some college programs offering tuition-free ‘work & learn’ curriculums.
The best way for high school juniors to find a summer program of interest is to call or visit their local community college. Most also have their summer programs posted on their websites.
Summer college programs don’t necessarily have to be in a field of study that the student intends to pursue for their degree. These programs can offer a chance to explore different areas of interest, or even an opportunity to “try their hands” in an area that they are interested in, but aren’t sure if it’s something follow in a college career.
For the high school student, the question comes down to interest. Are you interested in improving your writing skills? Would an intensive science and math program sound more to your liking? Maybe your interests are more artistic, and you’d like to write a play, act, dance, paint, or sculpt?
Apprentice programs and internships are another excellent opportunity for high school students, especially those who may not be interested in, or able to go directly to college after high school graduation. Becoming an apprentice or interning can provide valuable work experience, and there are bound to be programs in nearly any area of interest.
Summer college programs for high school juniors can often be life-changing experiences, providing the exposure and immersion that helps set the course for the rest of their lives. Or, they can simply provide a worthwhile, safe, and productive way to spend the summer months that might otherwise be squandered.
